MERZOUGA VILLAGE
Our Merzouga 44 desert trip will begin with a pick-up from your hotel, and we’ll begin by visiting Hassi Labied oasis, a garden beside the sand dunes managed by the people of the village, where you’ll see how the people get water from the sand dunes to the garden using a traditional irrigation system.
Then we continue to Merzouga Lake (a seasonal lake), which is a popular migration destination for birds when the lake is full of water. When the lake is dry, we can skip going there.
We will continue our journey to Khamlia village, stopping along the way to visit a car museum. When we arrive in Khamlia village, we will have the opportunity to listen to and enjoy Gnawa music performed by locals. Gnawa music originated in Sudan, Mali, and other Sub-Saharan African countries.
We will continue our journey into the black desert (volcanic stones), stopping first at a mountain with a panoramic view before continuing to Mifis Village, an old village built by the French during colonization. It’s also known as the mines village because of the mineral mines, where some Moroccans still work.
The next stop will be with a nomadic family in the desert who still lives in a tent; there, we will have a cup of tea and learn about the nomadic lifestyle.
Driving through the sand dunes back to Merzouga village or other nearby villages for lunch and drop-off at your accommodation.
