Merzouga: Morocco’s most spectacular dunes
Merzouga sits next to Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden dunes that change colour at sunrise and sunset. It’s the Sahara you picture in your head. Besides the camel ride, you can go quad biking, take a buggy ride, join a 4×4 desert tour to Khamlia or sleep in a luxury camp with a private bathroom.
The downside is distance: from Marrakech you need at least 3 days. In return, the road passes some of Morocco’s most beautiful places: the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge.
Zagora: the closest desert to Marrakech
Zagora is the gateway to the desert in the Draa Valley, with its huge palm grove and mud-brick villages. The dunes are smaller than in Merzouga, but a sunset camel ride, Berber dinner and a night under the stars are just as authentic. It’s the best option if you only have a weekend.
What if I only have one day?
One day isn’t enough to reach either desert. The alternative is the Agafay desert, a stone desert one hour from Marrakech with quad biking, camel rides and dinner with a show.

Merzouga vs Zagora: which desert is right for you?
Beyond the distance, choosing between Merzouga vs Zagora depends on who you travel with and what you expect from the Sahara:
- Couples and photographers: Merzouga. The golden Erg Chebbi dunes at sunrise and sunset are the most photogenic in Morocco, and you can sleep in a luxury camp.
- Families with young children: Zagora in 2 days, or Merzouga in 4 days so the drives are shorter each day.
- Adventure lovers: Merzouga, with quad biking, buggies, 4×4 trips and sandboarding on the big dunes.
- A weekend or a short stay: Zagora, the only real desert you can reach and return from in 2 days.
- Winter travellers: both work, but desert nights are cold, so check our list of what to pack for the Sahara desert.
Both routes cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco’s two great Saharan sand seas, while Zagora sits at the end of the Draa Valley palm groves. For the full route, read how to get from Marrakech to Merzouga.
